Brian Cassey: Cyclone Yasi - Cat 5

Following hot the heels of Australia's unprecedented and disastrous floods in December and January, a cylone of massive proportions slammed into the north Queensland coast bringing further misery to the populace.

Category 5 Cyclone Yasi formed near Fiji, tracked across the Coral Sea and threatened to devastate the major cities of Cairns and Townsville.

Large sections of the population of northern Queensland were evacuated to cyclone rated shelters to wait out the tempest.

Cairns and Townsville were spared the height of the storm. However, the coastal communities between - Silkwood, El Arish, Tully, Mission Beach, Hull Heads, Tully Heads and Cardwell - were smashed by near 300 kilometre an hour winds and a massive storm surge several metres high.

Homes. business and lives shattered ... again ...
