Brian Cassey: Gone To The Dogs

In May 2009 the Cairns Greyhound Racing Club was informed by the Queensland governing body - Greyhounds Queensland - that their small financially stable club was to be de-registered and would cease racing on 30th June 2009.

To continue racing their dogs after that date club members would face a nine hour round trip to the next nearest club track at Townsville. Many of their beloved greyhounds faced euthanasia.

However the Cairns club determined to battle the authorities and vowed to maintain racing in the area and keep the club of 50 years standing operating.

(Update - late in 2009 Greyhounds Queensland granted the club a reprieve but the number of their meetings was slashed by half.)
