Brian Cassey: Ramadan in Cairns

Cairns Australia - September 2008.

Cairns first (and only) Mosque - the Abu Bakr As-Siddiq Mosque - was a converted "Queenslander" style house in a quiet suburban street. The faithful - usually less than twenty - came to pray and hear Iman Abdul Aziz Mohammed.

However, against most locals wishes, they have now built a new purpose built Mosque on the site in the midst of the cities "Heritage" area. After much public and somtimes spiteful debate , Cairns council approved the plan.

I was invited to attend Friday prayer at the old mosque during Ramadan before the demolition.

(The new Mosque is now completed and will be opened officially in mid 2010.)
