Dean Saffron: Urandangi Mob

Located 260 km from Mount Isa, the population of Urandangi consists mainly of children. Although the community does not have material wealth, the richness of family life and community pride unite the local population. “This is our land” I was told repeatedly. An elder explained to me “We love our life and our country and we want future generations to continue to live here . What we need is only a little help from the government to improve the local amenities which includes , raised shelter to accomodate us during the rainy season , electricity instead of using expensive generators and medical facilities on hand.” This message was reiterated to me by other community members. Despite the temperature hovering in the late forties, the dynamic in this township was engaging. This is my tribute 24 hours in the life of a desert community.
