Latest Stories: Soulless in Seoul

As the Republic of Korea (South Korea) powers headlong towards a top ten position in the Global economies list - it seems to have forgotten how to treat it's elderly and less fortunate citizens.

An angry battle of attrition is devoloping in the capitol Seoul between protagonists - the many homeless who populate Seoul Railway Station - and State owned Korail who operate the National rail network.

Korail has began to forcibly evict several hundred homeless men and women from the new Seoul Station and the adjoining beautifully renovated 1925 station - a move that is being investigated by the International Human Rights Commission.

To justify the evictions Korail claims passengers have complained about the homeless and - bizarrely - that they pose a terrorist threat.

Many homeless have lived there for many years and some were victims of the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Korail has banned the homeless from the station between 1.30am and 4.30am, but the effect has been to move them to the outside surrounding station precinct and into the connecting underpasses.

Activists, Civic and Church groups have rallied behind the homeless but Korail have no intention of reversing the decision.
